“Oh Dani, you’re such a good swimmer.”
From a young age we are often told what we are good at by our parents, society, friends, or coaches. We absorb these messages and let them define us without thought or question. We set out to follow our joy and, in return, receive validation, encouragement, and a sense of purpose.
But what happens when our identity is formed based on these external messages? What happens when I look in the mirror and I don’t know who I see?
Join me and Dr. Parks Springer as we dive deeper into this Identity & Athletes conversation. How do the messages we receive in adolescence impact how we see ourselves as adults? What happens to our identity as we age and evolve? Am I a good swimmer because that is what I was told, or is that what I believe?
